We're back: why October is about cooperatives
A month of honest conversations about how Nigerians save together and how to make it easier.

It's been a while since we posted here. We've spent that time building, listening to the people who use Monietab, and learning a lot about how Nigerians actually save. We're back, and we're starting with the people who've been saving together for generations.
Think about your own life. There's a good chance a cooperative, ajo, esusu, or thrift group has helped someone close to you. Maybe it paid a child's school fees. Maybe it helped your aunty open her shop, or got your colleague through a medical emergency. Maybe it's the staff cooperative that quietly deducts from your salary every month and lets you take a loan when things get tight.
These groups are some of the oldest and most trusted financial systems we have. They run on something no bank can manufacture: people who know each other, keeping their word.
But there's another side to the story. As groups grow, the way they're managed often doesn't. The treasurer who could track 20 members in one exercise book is now juggling 200 members across notebooks, spreadsheets, bank alerts and a very busy WhatsApp group. Members want to know their balance. Executives want reports. Everyone wants to be sure their money is safe.
That's what this month is about.
Digital Cooperative Month
Throughout October, we're hosting a conversation about cooperatives across our blog, social media, and WhatsApp community. Here's what's coming:
Week 2: The Cooperative Challenge.
The real problems growing groups face, from missing records to "I paid since March o."
Week 3: Going Digital.
What going digital actually changes, in plain language.
Week 4: Building Better Cooperatives.
Including our Treasurers' Hangout, a live conversation with real cooperative treasurers on Thursday, Oct 22.
Oct 31: World Savings Day.
We'll close the month together and look ahead to November.
We'll be posting here every week. Each post will be practical, honest, and written for the people who actually run and belong to these groups.
We want to hear from you
